Greater Wigston Historical Society Bulletin 60
Contains biography of John Clarke the banker (1781-1858) who owned the New Parks estate and sold it after going bankrupt. This John Clarke isn't currently connected to our family tree but he was undoubtedly related to John Clarke (1791-1846, father of CS Clarke) in some way.

HOOPER, Emily
HOOPER, Emily
Description
Photograph of Emily Hooper, daughter of Robert. Prominent Upper Hutt family, arrived in Petone in 1840 and farmed at Emerald Hill. Image donated by Thelma Morgan.

An obituary for Emily Hooper was printed in the Hutt Valley Independent on 15 November 1913, as follows:

Mrs. EMILY R. L. HOOPER. We have to announce the death of Mrs, Emily Rebecca Louisa Hooper, one of the oldest Hutt Valley pioneer settlers and wife of Robert Hooper of Horseshoe Bend, at her residence on Monday, November 3, at the age of 74 years. The deceased lady (then Miss Ellingham) left England, her native country, in the "Lady Nugent" in 1842, and resided at the Hutt with her parents with whom she had made the voyage out. On May 4,1861, she was married to Robert Hooper, at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Wellington, by the Rev. (afterwards Archdeacon) Stock. The newly wedded couple commenced housekeeping a few days later at Horseshoe Bend and continued in residence there until their partnership of 52 years of married life was broken by the death of the "better half". There were thirteen children, issue of the marriage, seven sons (one of whom died in infancy) and six daughters. At the date of her death, (deceased had 53 grandchildren and 5 grandchildren). Death, which occurred after an illness of nine weeks duration, was due to internal complications. The interment took place at Akatarawa Cemetery on November 5, in the presence of a large gathering of settlers from far and near. The service at the grave was conducted by Mr. Oakshotte of the "Gospel Hall" community.
