1053 | Edna was born on the 5th January 1911 in Hamua, Manawatu. She attended the Convent school in Marton and music was one of her favorite subjects. Edna's older sister Florrie had left Marton to attend a Convent school called St Benedicts in Auckland, near the corner of Symond Street/top of Newton Rd. When Edna left school, she also came to Auckland and did "live in" house keeping jobs in Remuera for a short time; she became an excellent cook. She then worked for Kelliher Breweries & Moses [Financier/accountant] She later joined her sister Marion who was working in the tailoring industry. Marion and Dorothy played "basketball" which later became known as netball. Edna chose not to join with Marion & Dorothy. Dorothy was quite content playing in friendly games while Marion went on to play competitively for the Arahi club. In those days, the teams consisted of 9 players, not 7 as they play today. There were 3 goalies; 3 centres and 3 defence players. All their games were played at Windmill Rd, Mt Eden. As a result of her music classes at the convent, Florrie became an excellent pianist. She became a music teacher in Auckland when she was living in 45 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby with Robert Lowe Brewster & Martha Brewster. [Robert specialised in writing freehand letterheads for local businesses.] Edna married John Way in 1937 in Auckland and they settled in a flat in the city for a short period. They later lived out at Kumeu with Bill & Dorothy Ward's farm [her sister] for a while. Then they purchased a section in Huapai and had a nice house built on the section which was in a street at the back of the Huapai shops. John's parents had a farm out at Riverhead, in the west. Edna used to go to Kumeu dances and that's where she met John. Edna & John had two children: Marie born in 1938 and John in 1942. They attended Huapai school. John who was commonly known as "Jack", had his own CARRYING BUSINESS. Their son also called John entered the carrying business as well. Edna became a very keen Bowls player. She was in the Waimauku Bowling Club. She became a Life member of the Agriculture & Horticulture Society, helping in catering at the Kumeu Show. She also became a Life member of the Woman's Country Institute. Edna's son John and Helen had a large orchard near where they lived. John also loved his fishing. They lived in the Huapai district since1940. Edna died in 1995. | WALKLEY, Edna Marie (I03862)

1091 | Email from Gedmatch contact: Hi Raewyn, nice to hear from you, this family is connected to me through my grandson Freddie Smith (Gedmatch, A445587) his mother Sabrina Clay ( T325674) is Harold Scott's granddaughter. Harold would be your second cousin twice removed. The connection with yourself is that Harold is the son of John Edward Scott 1881-1978, who is the son of James Scott born 1847 Sloothby, this James being a brother of your GG Grandfather Edward born 1854 Halton. The family still live local to the area, indeed Harold is still with us aged 89 and lives on a smallholding near Eastville. Best wishes, Keith | SCOTT, James (I5158)

1092 | Email from Pauline, a cousin of Thelma Thomas (Gray): Hi Thelma Thanks for the information on the Grey family. I found the part interesting re the Dolman family. I remember Mary very well she married quite late in life (for those days). She was a flower girl at my mother's wedding will send you a copy of the photo when I fish it out The unamed people in the back row are Mary,s husband Gerry and their two sons. Unfortunately they were both born handicapped. No idea what has happened to them. Mary obviously was my mother's cousin she had two brothers. I think the two families were quite close. I think I may have a photo of your father with our grandmother at our house in Auckland I think that may have been the last time she saw your father. I will look for it this week. Cheers Pauline | DOLMAN, Kathleen Mary Inga (I5115)

1094 | Email from Thelma, daughter of Arthur Gray. My Father was Arthur, Kates and Harold Grays 3rd Child. My dad was the black sheep of their family and I only know what I found out after he died (35 Years ago). My Dad had quiet a few families over his 76 Years my family being his last. I'm 54 - I have a younger full Brother that is 45. I have a older half brother and sister from another relationship, another half sister from another, plus another older Half Brother Henry (used to live in New Plymouth) who is Dad's oldest at 89. Out of the half brothers and sisters Henry is the only one I have met. Yes I am in New Zealand living in Christchurch. The information I have found out has been from a uncle who gave me some information after Dad died, a wee bit from a half sister and some from a Cousin. I have also had contact with a Third cousin (I think by working it all back that is where he fits) - met him and his wife _ they went to the family village when they were in England. Harold and Kate brought their first 5 children from England 10th April 1913. There last living residence in England was Gunby Candlesby, Lincolnshire, England Kate Richardson was born on June 29, 1879, in Hemingby, Lincolnshire, She married Harold Gray on December 12, 1904, in High Toynton, Lincolnshire. They had 10 children in 17 years. She died on September 15, 1967, in Taihape, Rangitikei, New Zealand, at the age of 88, and was buried there. They spend a lot of their lives in NZ living in Taihape and both them and a few of their children are buried there. I have also been contacted by a family tree specialist from Hemingby, as there was a gentleman inquiry about Kate, as this gentleman's Dad apparently was maybe Kate's oldest child, who stay in England when they left. His mother is named as Kate Richardson, on his birth Cert. If the information is correct she was only 15 when he was born. He would have been 19 when they left England, and looks like he may have stay with Elizabeth's (Her Mum's) sister Rebecca Green as they found him living with them on the cenus after they left. Nobody I spoke to knew anything about this. At present I have 2 family tree with Gray's in it. The first is Thelma's Family tree - I am slowing scrapping that one. I have now created a new one that is called Gray Family Tree, which I am redoing from the ground up. Now with this new information on Kate will make life a lot easier. If you have any more questions or maybe some more answers for me, I would like to keep in touch. Thanks Thelma | RICHARDSON, Kate (I04119)
