1792 | Laurel Millett was born and lived in Waiuku, a South Auckland rural town until leaving High School. She then went to live in Onehunga and commenced her working life in a city office. Music was a big part of her life and she travelled back to her home every weekend to give piano lessons. As well as this she was preparing to sit further examinations and Dora Walkley offered the use of the family piano for her to practise so it was inevitable that she should meet John Walkley. John and Laurel married on 18 Feb 1961 at St Davids Church Khyber Pass Rd. Their first born Stuart John one year later on 11 Feb 1962 and a second child Christopher Bruce three years later on 30 Jan 1964 John was employed as a grocer in a local store, he studied and obtained his own business under the IGA scheme. This first shop was at Ashley Ave Mangere East so the family moved there and rented a home close to the business. The business was a successful venture it was a popular place for shoppers and the family made many friends. In 1967 Stuart was enrolled as a pupil at Robertson Rd Primary School school and a third son Bevan Ross was born. At that time there was only limited pre school education available so John and some other fathers combined their skills and were successful in building a Play centre. The Mangere business was sold and in 1969 the family moved and bought another grocery business at 181 Pt Chevalier Rd. John and Laurel became very involved with the local Primary School in Te Ra Rd where the boys were pupils. John served on the School Committee and Laurel on the PTA. Later the business was sold and a home bought in the area. Two years after this John and Laurel separated. John became a Taxi driver and at a later date bought his own Taxi Licence. Laurel commenced work in an Accountants office where she worked for many years. Stuart after leaving High School worked for Telecom, he later went to work in Australia then returned to NZ and is now living in America where he shares custody of his daughter Camryn Danielle Walkley.
