1901 | Marlborough Express, Volume XLVIII, Issue 87, 15 April 1914, Page 5 James Howard, a very old resident of Marlborough, in his 80th year. The deceased, who was a native of Surrey, England, arrived in Wellington, by the barque Simlah early in the year 1855, coming on to the Wairau via Nelson immediately afterwards. He followed the occupation of a carpenter up to a few years ago, when he left Blenheim to reside in, Palmerston North. A family of three sons and eight daughters are left to mourn Ms loss, also twenty-eight grandchildren arid eight great-grandchildren. The Marlborough members of the; family are: Mrs H.'. Masters, Seddon, and Mesdames C. L. Goodman and W. H. Humphreys, of Blenheim. The interment took place at Palmerston North. | HOWARD, James (I3682)

1903 | Marlborough Express, Volume XX, Issue 214, 11 September 1884, Page 3 Sir, - With your permission I beg leave to state that Robert Rush and friends are laboring under a mistake with reference to the first public house in the "Beaver" being built of gin cases. I therefore must contradict his assertion made at a public gathering that such was the case. Now Sir, to my certain knowledge no such place existed when I arrived at "Beaver" (March, 1855) or since. How R. R. can say, that he believes part of the erection was still standing when he arrived here 20 years ago, I cannot think. I can bring several witnesses to prove that what I state is correct. - Yours &c., JAMES HOWARD. | HOWARD, James (I3682)

1905 | Marlborough Express, Volume XXXI, Issue 187, 11 August 1896, Page 2 Death of an Old Blenheimite Death has removed a very old settler in the person of Mrs Read, who passed away yesterday at the residence of Mr C. Goodman, Manse Road. Deceased has a splendid record of years, dying at the age of 82, after a residence in the Wairau, extending over 41 years. Mrs Read was born at Burton, Linconshire, in August 1814 and came out with her late husband to Melbourne in the "Indian Queen" in 1853. They arrived in Nelson by the brig "Sprag" early in 1855, and came to the Wairau the same year for Mr Henry Godfrey of Woodbourne. At one time Mr Read kept the old Victoria Hotel. Mrs James Howard is the only surviving daughter, and thirteen grandchildren and the same number of great grand children mourn the demise of their respected progenitress.
