"Drink Preferred"
"When it came to the point he told you in effect he preffered the drink to you" Mr. Justice Callan asked Jane Cain (Mr. Snedden), who sought a divorce from William Gerald Cain following a verbal seperation. Petitioner agreed that the position was as His Honor said. Respondent developed drinking habits on his return from the war, and the parties agreed to seperate. The two children were both over 21 years of age. A decree nisi was granted to petitioner, with costs against respondent.

Our Omaha correspondent writes It is with regret I have to record the death of Mr. Angus Matheson, which took place on Monday, the 29th of August. His age was 63 years. Mr. Matheson was born in Ross-shire, Scotland, and went with his parents to America about 58 years ago, where he, with his late brother, built several vessels, and generally followed a seafaring life. He arrived in New Zealand in the year 1857, in the Spray, of which he was part owner. He took up land in the Omaha district, where his family have resided ever since ; but Mr. Matheson still followed a seafaring life, having been captain of the schooners Herald, Kate McGregor, and other vessels until about twelve years ago, when he decided to retire from the sea, and reside with his family. He built the well known racing cutter Rangatira, which won several races in the Auckland regattas. Since Mr. Matheson has been residing here he has always taken a great interest in local affairs. He was nearly nine years chairman of the district school committee, seven years in succession, seven years a member of the Library Committee, and several years a member of the District Board. He was a thoroughly upright man, and a man of sound, good judgment, and was always ready to advise anyone; he was highly respected by all. The funeral took place on Wednesday. His remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of people from all the surrounding districts. The Rev. R. McKinney, of Mahurangi, officiated at the cemetery, and after the service he announced that he should be here on Sunday morning, September 11, and preach a funeral sermon. Mr. Matheson leaves a widow together with a family of four sons and seven daughters. Be had twelve grand-children.

WEDDING BELLS
CASEY? KAVANAGH On Tuesday, November 10, a very pretty wedding took place at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin When Mr Joseph Casey, fifth son of Mr. James Casey, of Dunedin, was joined in the bonds of Matrimony to Miss Frances Kavanagh, fifth daughter, of Mr. B. Kavanagh, of Stewart Island. A Nuptial Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Murphy. Mr. A. W. Lilly presided at the organ, and as the bridal party left the Cathedral played Mendelssohn's wedding march. The bride, who was given away by Mr. W. R. Monteath, looked exceedingly well in a pretty travelling costume of cinnamon-brown flaked silk voile and white picture hat. She also wore a valuable gold brooch, set with diamonds and rubies, the gift of. the bridegroom. The bridesmaid was Miss L. Kavanagh (sister of the bride), who was attired in a royal blue faced cloth costume and hat to match, and wore a dainty gold chain with a cross pendant, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr. Thomas Casey, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man. After the ceremony the bridal, party drove to the residence of Mr. James Casey, where the wedding breakfast was held. The Rev. Father Murphy proposed the health of the young couple, and testified to the high esteem in which both were held. The happy couple left in the afternoon for the South. The bride's gift to the bridegroom) was a pair of gold sleeve links, whilst both bride and bridegroom were the recipients of many handsome and useful presents, among them being a large statue of the Sacred Heart from the nuns of the North-East Valley.

Obituary
MR. JAMES CASEY, DUNEDIN.
We regret to record the death of a very old resident of Dunedin in the person of Mr. James Casey, of Leith avenue, who passed away on Monday in his 75th year. The deceased, who was a highly esteemed member of the Cathedral parish, was born in County Galway, and came out to New Zealand in 1863. Soon after his arrival he settled in Dunedin, where he had resided ever since, with the exception of a short time spent on the diggings. He had been a member of the local branch of the Hibernian Society for close on forty years, and for twenty years was a trustee of the branch. It is a rather remarkable fact that his nine sons are also members of the same branch. The deceased, who had been ill for about four months, was constantly visited by the Cathedral clergy, and died fortified by all the rites of the Church of which he was a devoted member. He leaves a widow, nine sons, three daughters, and several grandchildren to mourn their loss. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, was a large and representative one, and included members of the Hibernian Society in regalia. ? R.I.P.
