2341 Papers Past obituary (Northern Advocate, 17 June 1920) CAMPBELL, John (I104)

2342 Papers Past shows he was convicted numerous (70-80) times for various offenses mostly involving alcohol. He spent several spells at the Salvation Army rehabilitation centre on Rotoroa Island, the last for two years from May 1917. He was found drowned in the harbour only a short time after his release, most probably accidentally falling into the water while drunk. I have digital copies of three sworn depositions from the coroner's report. He never married. CAIN, George Henry (I3675)

Wedding Bells (Wairarapa Daily Times, Volume XXVII, Issue 7371, 27 January 1903, Page 2)

A very pretty wedding was solemnised at St. Patrick's Church, Masterton, this morning, Mr Alfred Hooper, of Masterton, being united to Miss Florence Ruth Miller, daughter of Mrs J. M. McCarthy, of this town. The ceremony was performed by the Rv. Father Molloy. The bride, who was attired in a white cashmere dress, strapped with white sateen and insertion, and wearing tho orthodox veil, etc., was attended by Misses Grace and Mabel Hooper (nieces of the bridegroom) and Miss "Cissy" Miller (sister of the bride), dressed respectively in ? and pink flowered muslin. Mrs McCarthy, mother of the bride, was dressed in silver gray poplin, handsomely trimmed, and wore a black hat trimmed with black and white ostrich feathers. The gift of the bridegroom to the bride was a valuable gold brooch, and to the bridesmaids gold and silver brooches. The wedding breakfast was laid at the residence of Mr Robert Hooper (brother of the bridegroom), and there were a large number of guests. The happy couple left in the afternoon for the South, where the honeymoon is to be spent, carrying with them hearty good wishes from a large circle of friends.
