R. D. NOSWORTHY, Pro C. O. Graham, Official Assignee. Papers Past Marlborough Express 2 December 1885 Page 2 The first meeting of the creditors of William Tomlins, Tailor, took place yesterday in the Court House. Present: - The Deputy Assignee (in the chair,) and Messrs Steer, H. Jellyman, W. Litchfield, Girling, and Brace. The assets consisted of £15, furniture. The following is the list of creditors, all uninsured :- Nelson- Henry Hounsell £10 0s Id, F. H. Foy £2, E Edwards £3, W. Dear £2 14, Fama £1 6s, W. Cooksey 12s 6d, J. Gorrie £1 2s 6d, Wilkins and Field 13s ; Blenheim- Steer £4 4s, Girling £8, Litchfield and Son £10 11s 2d, Harding 7s 6d, H. Jellyman £3 13s 3½d, J. Lees £1 10s, C. The Deputy Assignee read the following statement which the debtor had made on examination :-" Previous to my arrival in Blenheim in Sept., 1884, I resided in Nelson for nine months. I contracted the debts due to my Nelson creditors during the first four months of my residency in that city, owing to my not procuring any work at my trade. During the latter portion of my stay, I did, not earn sufficient to pay for necessaries and clear myself from my liabilities. I then fell out of work and came to Blenheim to seek for work, and went into the country for that purpose, not having succeeded to obtain it in town. I returned to Blenheim. My wife having sold my furniture in Nelson joined me here, since which I have obtained work at intervals, and earned from 37s to £2 weekly when in full work, but during some weeks I earned 18s to 30s. My bankruptcy has been caused by my entering into boarding house keeping, causing me to contract debts for furniture, bedding, &c. Owing to not having a, sufficient number of boarders, the business was unremunerative, and I had to relinquish that business, causing me great loss. I have a family of six children, and it requires all my earnings to provide for the household." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Jellyman, That the bankrupt pay to the Assignee the sum of 25s per month, and that on the receipt of 10s in the £ on the present liabilities he be granted his discharge. The meeting then adjourned. Evening Post, Volume XXXVII, Issue 136, 10 June 1889, Page 3 We are informed that William Tomlins, about whose safety some misgivings have been felt by his friends, was on Saturday seen at Otaki, and he was then on his way to Palmerston North, in search of work. Papers Past > Evening Post > 6 July 1889 > Page 2 > THE OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY. u2666 . A wife-deserter named William Tomlins, a tailor by trade, who was arrested at Eltham, near Hawera, and brought into town yesterday, appeared before Mr. Robinson, R.M., this morning, to answer the charge. Tomlins pleaded Guilty, but said he had no intention of leaving his wife unprovided for. He explained that finding he could not obtain a satisfactory remuneration for his work in Wellington, he proceeded up country in search of better employment. He had succeeded in getting work, and offered to either provide a home for his wife and family or else make a contribution towards their support. Defendant's wife, in reply to his Worship, said she would not care to go with her husband unless she was certain he was in a position to keep her and his family. She also stated that her husband had left his family quite unprovided for, and without warning. His Worship made an order requiring the defendant to make a payment of 10s per week towards the maintenance of his wife and 4s per week towards that of each of his five infant children. New Zealand Herald, Volume XXVI, Issue 9450, 22 August 1889, Page 6 Eltham Mr. William Tomlins, from Wellington, has started a tailoring business here, and, I am glad to say, has met with a large amount of support already. That a splendid business in that line can be formed here there is no doubt, and Mr. Tomlins appears to possess the qualities which demand success. Papers Past > Hawera & Normanby Star > 27 March 1899 > Page 2 > Magistrate's Court. Magistrate's Court. OPUNAKE. Before R. L. Stanford, Esq., S.M. Friday, March 24. AFFILIATION. W. Tomlins was charged with failing to provide for his illegitimate child. He admitted the liability, and undertook to immediately provide. Hawera & Normanby Star, Volume XVII, Issue 2964, 29 October 1891, Page 2 NORMANBY. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) A deliberate attempt was made last night to burn down the house in the occupation of Mrs. Tomlins. It appears that between 11 and 12 last evening Mrs. Tomlins smelt something burning and upon going into the bedroom found it full of smoke. A search was at once made when it was discovered that someone had set fire to the house on the outside. Mr. Paine who was near the premises, at once ran for water; and put the fire out. The perpetrator of the deed is still undiscovered but the police are working the case up. No reason can be given for trying to burn the house, other than that it must be a pure piece of mischief. 2421 | RE: 1901 England Census Email from Carol Walkley Hi Pat Thank you for the information that you sent to myself and Liz. I've managed to speak to Liz today to confirm my connection to the family. The information that I have so far is: Arthur Reginald and Frederick Douglas Walkley (Doug) who was my Grandfather, continued in the family business in the Strand until Arthur Reginald was advised to moved to the seaside due to ill health, Doug was then left to wind up the business, the dates of this I'm not sure of. Then during this time or shortly afterwards he enlisted in the army. | WALKLEY, Arthur (I03932)
