2456 | Ronald Jefferies Walkley, second son of Sidney Stanley Walkley, and Ethel Lowe Brewster, and fourth in a family of ten children, was born in Hamua on 3 May 1912. He received his education at Hamua Primary School. Queen's Park School, Wanganui and Junction School, Marton. On 22 April 1935 he was married to Catherine Mary Winstanley (Kitty) at St Stephen's Church, Marton. Kitty emigrated to New Zealand from England with her parents and sister Rita, arriving in Wellington on 17 March 1920. Ron and Kitty had four children, Ronald William, Bryan Dennis, Beverley Joan and a baby who died at birth. Ron became a builder and ran a successful building firm in Wanganui for many years, where he trained both his sons Bill and Bryan. Ron and Kitty lived in Castlecliff Wanganui for many years, before moving to Matamata in 1969, and then finally moving to live in Glenfield, Auckland in 1978. Kitty Died in Auckland on March the 2nd 1980. Ron continued to live in Glenfield until his death on the 26th March 1985 | WALKLEY, Ronald Jefferies (I03875)

2458 | Ronald William Walkley, (Bill) was the first child of Ron and Kitty Walkley. Bill was born in Marton on the 8th April 1936, and grew up in Marton and Wanganui, where he attended Castlecliff School. Bill was apprenticed as a builder with his father, and worked in the building trade for many years in and around Wanganui and the surrounding district with his father, Ron, before meeting Annette Louise Barraud. Annette trained as a nurse at New Plymouth and is the Great Grand-daughter of Artist, Charles Decimus Barraud well known for his early New Zealand paintings. [Charles Decimus Barraud was a painter and chemist. He arrived at Wellington, New Zealand in 1849 and set up business as a chemist. Soon after his arrival he became known locally as a painter. After holding an art union of 60 of his paintings and engravings at Lyttleton in 1852, Barraud seems to have travelled to Victoria. C.D. Barraud exhibited two works at the 1854 Melbourne Exhibition, Forest of Black Birch, New Zealand and a water colour portrait of George Guillaume (apparently of Melbourne). He was possibly the 'Mr Barrow' who painted a portrait of The Right Worshipful the Mayor (noted in the Melbourne Argus of 1 June 1858 but evidently done earlier). Barraud showed Horowhenua Lake, New Zealand (w/c, £25), Bush Scene] Bill and Annette married on 11th October 1969 at Christ Church Anglican Church in Wanganui. They continued to live and work in Wanganui until moving to live in Glenfield, Auckland in 1972. Bill met and formed a building firm, Walkley and Wood Builders Limited, with his friend Charlie Wood in 1973, which has only recently wound up after 34 successful years. In 1974 Bill and Annette had their first child a daughter Joanna Lyn, and then welcomed a second daughter Lisa Catherine in 1976. Since semi retiring in 1986 Bill and Annette have spent much time renovating their two homes in Glenfield and in Whitianga in the Coromandel Peninsula. In recent years Bill has finally retired from building, and he and Annette have spent much time enjoying travelling around the North and South Islands, and they have also had several trips to Australia, which they have travelled around extensively. They still continue to live In Glenfield, and are due to celebrate 40 happy years of marriage in October 2009. | WALKLEY, Ronald William (I03867)

2459 | Ronald's second son, Bryan was born in Marton in1940. The family moved to 29 Waitote Street, Wanganui and he attended Castlecliff school before leaving to be an apprentice golf professional under Jim Tunnell at the Castlecliff and Belmont Golf clubs. After 2 years he worked at Woolworth for a year before starting an apprenticeship as carpenter with his father working mainly for farmers in the Kariori. He then joined Emmett Brothers where he was quickly promoted to foreman. While building Wanganui High School he met his future wife Marjorie Antoinette (Toni) Swan, marrying in 1962 and then moving into a new house at 11 Omori Place, Castlecliff, Wanganui. Their son Bruce was born in 1962, followed by a daughter Susan in 1963. They moved to Australia in 1968 for 6 months, returning to Glenfield, Auckland where they had the Manuka Road Dairy for 2 years. They then purchased a home and 3 flats at 136 St Johns Road Meadowbank and Bryan returned to his trade as builder and Toni, his wife, to Secondary School teaching. In 1972 they moved to 37 Victoria Avenue, where they were living when Bruce and Susan started their secondary school years. Over the next decade Bryan built 3 new homes, 7 Norman Lesser Drive, 40 and 42 Cornwall Park Avenue before they retired to 484 Oxley Drive, Runaway Bay, Gold Coast, Australia in 1988 as at this time Bruce was living in London and Susan had married and was living in Darwin. When Bruce and his new wife Debbie returned to New Zealand in 1992, they waited till their first grandson Tor was born in Darwin in 1993 before also returning to Auckland, building another new house, their present home at 9 St. Elmo Rise, Howick and operating Lady Ascot Rest Home at 24 Ascot Avenue, Remuera until 2003. After a second short retirement in 2005 Bryan and Toni developed a new motel, Alpine Lake Motor Lodge, 141 Heuheu Street, Taupo, managing it themselves for a year before handing over to daughter Susan and husband Ron on their return from Darwin. Bryan is a keen golfer, starting as a junior at Castlecliff Golf club and later a senior champion at Howick and an intermediate champion at his present club Formosa.
