Ernest, Mabel, Albert, Honor & Alfred Wyatt, Harold, Wilfred , Florrie, Annie & Arthur Torkington & Mr Smith were here and Jim Dunning and C. Gravatt were here for tea. The newly married couple and Revd Hawkins went away in the S.S. "Kapanui", we all went down to the wharf to see them off. Ron Tiria- born Auckland 1957 of Cook Island ethnicity, schooled Richmond Rd Primary School, Mt Albert Boys Grammar. Worked and trained as a Locomotive Assistant Engineer for 8 years in Auckland. Moved together to Australia in 1985, residing in Perth, Alice Springs, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kakadu National Park and Darwin until 2007. Both worked in Australian hospitality and tourism industries, then operated a fitness centre for 6 years before returning to NZ. During Australian years travelled extensively for 4 years around Nth, Central & Sth America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Son,Tor, born Darwin, Australia 10 August 1993. Schooled Larrakeyah Primary School, Darwin & currently attending Taupo Nui a Tia College,Taupo. Family residing in Taupo since 2007, managing family motel business. 890 | David was born in Bayswater, Auckland . He went to Avondale primary, Intermediate & Avondale College. Dave remembers his Mother & father starting the Avondale Junior Amateur Athletic Club about the late 1950' and 1960's period. He naturally became involved in athletics with his parents support and encouragement and has always retain interest in keeping fit. 1966 was his last year at Secondary & David joined the army in 1967 at Waiouru. He joined the regular force cadets & was there for 2 years and then he went to the Papakura Military camp. He trained & specialised as an automobile technician. He went overseas for service in Singapore for 2 years, then returned to Papakura for about 18 months in 1974 where he retired from the army. Dave remembers going to Nana Ethel Walkley's "Rest Home" in the Waitakere, to be Santa Clause for Nana and the residents in the early 1970's. His cousin Graeme Roberts took his place as Santa Claus when he was unable to attend. Nana died in 1975 The army prepared Dave well for "Civy street". He continued for the next 42+ years working as a mechanic. It was while Dave was working at Kirk Motors Ltd in New Market that he met Carol Anne Swinburne. At that time Dave was still living at home in Avondale with mum and dad. Dave and Carol decided to move south to the Hamilton district to work, They lived in Ngaruawahia where Kyla was born. David and Carol Anne separated. Dave met Debra who was from Huntly. All the boys Nicolas, Christopher and Samuel were born in Ngaruawahia. Dave and Debra sold their Ngaruawahia property and bought a small rural property at Waikaretu which is about 45 minutes SW of Pukekohe. They began a small farm of dry stock, few cows & pigs, goats some fowls and ducks. Debra worked the property while Dave carried on as mechanic at Te Kauwhata. They were at the farm for about 14 years. Dave's is currently living in Pukekohe & commuting to Mt Wellington working for a fork lift Coy. For recreation, Dave has now become involved in mountain biking. In 2007, Dave decided to travel to Turkey for the ANZAC Commemoration service in 2007. | WALKLEY, David Edward (I03896)
