    • On arrival in New Zealand was employed as Postmaster at Reikorangi, and then at Paraparaumu as well as keeping a general store.
      In 1899 he married Minnie Hainsworth who also came to New Zealand from England. They were married in Wanganui.
      He later removed to Levin where he conducted an accountancy business for many years, being the first Secretary of the Levin Fire Board, a position he held until he retired and relinquished his office to J.L. Arcus & Sons, Accountants of Wellington. He was affectionately known as "Fire Plug Walkley"
      Another position he held for many years was that of Secretary of the Horowhenua Patriotic Fund Board up until the time it was incorporated into the National Patriotic Fund Board during the Second World War.
      Upon his retirement he lived at his home "Selhurst" in Tiro Tiro Road, Levin until his death in 1954. He was 86 years of age.
