  Kate was involved at a school level with rowing and basketball and an Otago Representative Netballer. She also coached Otago U 21 Netball. She attended Otago University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Pharmacology. She continued to gain a second degree as Bachelor of Commerce in Finance. Kate married Matthew James Sale in Christchurch 5th August 2000 and moved to Auckland and worked for the Bank of New Zealand along with Matthew until they travelled and worked in England and Ireland with trips to Europe and the United Arab Emirates and Thailand. Their son Hugo James Sale was born in Auckland on 15th May 2006. The family now live in Auckland.
