- Ronald William Walkley, (Bill) was the first child of Ron and Kitty Walkley. Bill was born in Marton on the 8th April 1936, and grew up in Marton and Wanganui, where he attended Castlecliff School.
Bill was apprenticed as a builder with his father, and worked in the building trade for many years in and around Wanganui and the surrounding district with his father, Ron, before meeting Annette Louise Barraud.
Annette trained as a nurse at New Plymouth and is the Great Grand-daughter of Artist, Charles Decimus Barraud well known for his early New Zealand paintings.
[Charles Decimus Barraud was a painter and chemist. He arrived at Wellington, New Zealand in 1849 and set up business as a chemist. Soon after his arrival he became known locally as a painter. After holding an art union of 60 of his paintings and engravings at Lyttleton in 1852, Barraud seems to have travelled to Victoria. C.D. Barraud exhibited two works at the 1854 Melbourne Exhibition, Forest of Black Birch, New Zealand and a water colour portrait of George Guillaume (apparently of Melbourne). He was possibly the 'Mr Barrow' who painted a portrait of The Right Worshipful the Mayor (noted in the Melbourne Argus of 1 June 1858 but evidently done earlier). Barraud showed Horowhenua Lake, New Zealand (w/c, £25), Bush Scene]
Bill and Annette married on 11th October 1969 at Christ Church Anglican Church in Wanganui. They continued to live and work in Wanganui until moving to live in Glenfield, Auckland in 1972.
Bill met and formed a building firm, Walkley and Wood Builders Limited, with his friend Charlie Wood in 1973, which has only recently wound up after 34 successful years.
In 1974 Bill and Annette had their first child a daughter Joanna Lyn, and then welcomed a second daughter Lisa Catherine in 1976.
Since semi retiring in 1986 Bill and Annette have spent much time renovating their two homes in Glenfield and in Whitianga in the Coromandel Peninsula.
In recent years Bill has finally retired from building, and he and Annette have spent much time enjoying travelling around the North and South Islands, and they have also had several trips to Australia, which they have travelled around extensively.
They still continue to live In Glenfield, and are due to celebrate 40 happy years of marriage in October 2009.
