- Graeme Maurice Roberts, born 5th July 1946 received his education at Wesley Primary and Intermediate Schools, and Lynfield College, Auckland. On leaving College he joined the Health Department and gained the Royal N.Z. Society of Health Diplomas.
After 10 years' service to the Dept. he resigned and joined the American firm of "Neotec" Instruments Ltd, and became their regional Manager Representative for New Zealand, Australia and England.
He played hockey, was a member of Auckland Jaycees. Another interest was the Scouting movement, passing through Cub, Scout and Venturer sections. He has travelled extensively overseas.
On 8 December 1979 he married Clare Margaret Godwin Smith at the small village Church of "Our Lady of Lourdes", Wheatley, Oxfordshire, England. Clare was a New Zealand girl from Orewa.
An extract of interest, and describing much happier times is from a letter -written in England by Florence Yendell on the 2 December 1979 to her cousin Henry Stewart Walkley in New Zealand:-
"You would have loved to be with all the Walkleys on our last weekend with Freda and Elizabeth. Eight members of my family and a new addition. My nephew Graeme waited until our arrival to announce his engagement to a Dunedin girl. They are being married in Wheatley where they both live and work, on 8 December (1979). A Walkley gathering was planned for the weekend, so
with sleeping bags and extras, off we went to Wheatley. Freda, Elizabeth, Barry, Joy & I, where my sister Marion, son Graeme and Clare (fiance) and Mark, the youngest son, were waiting. First of all to the village Pub. to celebrate the engagement with drinks and a meal - Lots of fun. Next morning all packed into two cars and off to Stroud to visit the Church where our Great-Grandparents were married, then on to Horsley and Nailsworth where we visited the Church and found a Mrs Walkley was doing the flowers for a Harvest Festival Sunday. Seventeen Walkley names in the local 'phone book, but quite impossible in our short time there to contact them.
Saw very old Walkley tombstones, but apart from deciphering the name, we could not read any of the dates. Then off to find "Walkley Wood" and had our photo taken under the sign-post - Quite an emotional feeling both Marion and I felt while standing there and both wished Dad could have known - or even been with us.
On Sunday we had a formal dinner at Studley Priory Hotel, which finished off an exciting and happy weekend."
Graeme & Clare had 3 children, Carl, Anna and Jane who have all graduated from University and are now pursuing jobs overseas.
The family left New Zealand to settle in the Middle East for 10 years. Graeme had a teaching position in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In 1994 they returned to New Zealand and presently live in Northcote, Auckland
