Emigration 1886  England Find all individuals with events at this location
    • This is claimed in "The Walkleys" booklet, however it has proven to be incorrect.
    • On the Walkleys website there is a photo of "Ortona" - "which brought our ancestor Sidney Walkley from England to New Zealand". However the Ortona was launched in 1899, so doesn't fit with a 1886 immigration.
    • The fact he was in England in the 1891 census shows the emigration date is incorrect. In fact the name of the ship looks to be incorrect too.

  • Notes
    • Sidney was born on the 3rd February in 1870 in Croyden, England.
He came to New Zealand about 1886 when he was only 16 years old, with four brothers:
      1. Francis [Frank]
      2. Herbert
      3. Frederick [Fred]
      4. Henry [Harry]
Like his brothers he was a storekeeper.
In 1906 he married Ethel Lowe Brewster whose family was well known by and very close to the Walkley brothers in Levin.
The following item of interest is taken from the Chronicle published in Levin in 1906, and headed "Orange Blossoms":-
"A pretty wedding was solemnised at St Mary's Church, Levin, on Wednesday, 8th May, when Mr Sidney Walkley of Hamua, and brother of Mr F.C.J. Walkley of Ohau, was married to Miss Ethel Brewster, eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs R.L. Brewster of Levin, late of Blenheim. The bride, who was given away by her father, was neatly and stylishly attired in cream voile, with the orthodox veil and orange blossoms, and was attended by Misses Sophie, Dorothy, and Winnie Brewster, sisters and cousin of the bride respectively. The Bride carried a lovely shower bouquet of roses and chrysanthemums. Miss Dorothy [Brewster] appeared in cream silk, while the other bridesmaids were attired in cream serge, with velvet hats to match. Mr Harry Walkley. brother of the bridegroom, [Incorrect, this was probably Henry Walkley; 35 years of age] officiated in the capacity of best man while the Rev. Mr Worsley tied the nuptial knot. The bridge groom's gift to his bride was a valuable set of furs, and the bride's gift to her partner a handsome watch guard. The bride's travelling dress was of grey tweed, in which she looked very becoming. The honeymoon is to be spent in Napier, and for that purpose the happy couple left by the evening train on Wednesday for Palmerston North, taking their departure amidst showers of rice from many friends who had gathered at the station to wish them "God Speed". The presents received by the pair were of a useful, costly and ornamental description, and proved the popularity of the young couple. In the evening, a number of friends accepted the invitation of the bride's parents to celebrate the function, and a convivial time was spent".
Sidney started a grocery store in Hamua, Palmerston North/Eketahuna. We know that four of their children were born in Hamua: Ronald [1912], Edward [1914], Dorothy [1916] and Robert [1918]. Molly was born in 1920 about the time that Sidney and Ethel moved on to Jester Street in Wanganui where he owned a grocery store for 2 years. Molly died in the year of her birth and died in Wanganui. Marion was born in 12 April 1921 in Wanganui.
Sidney and Ethel shifted to Martin in 1921. They lived there for 10 years and during the 1929 Depression, the family suffered like everyone else. However, he managed to obtain a grocer shop in Shortland Street, where they lived for 3 years in a house over the shop. Joan Doreen Walkley was born 24 May 1927 in Marton.
Sidney & Ethel decided to move north with his family to Auckland. He found a house at 4 Grayson Avenue, Mt. Eden and went on relief work. All families received 4/- [4 Shilling] vouchers for grocery purchases during the Depression. Sidney went on to the pension, but Ethel took in boarders.
Sidney's retirement was spent in Auckland where he died in 1938 at the age of 68. Grayson Avenue was sold to Aunt Sophie [nee Brewster] & George Adams. Ethel [Nana] moved into a flat in Crummer Road, Grey Lynn. She later purchased a batch and moved it onto Bill & Dorothy [her daughter] Ward's farm in Kumeu.
