- Dora was born in Wellington, New Zealand on the 17th of May 1911. Her parents being Albert Leonard Rosa Petherick and Sarah Jane Petherick (nee Hamilton) born Rangiora 8/02/1885, died 1918 of Flu Epidemic 26/11/1918.
1840?s Pethericks family came from Cornwall, UK to Wellington, NZ on board the ship ?Aurora?. George Petherick married Ann Shirley. Ann came on the ship ?Arab?. They had a son George 1842 who married Charlotte Petherick (nee Jasker) and their son Albert Leonard Rosa was born 1883 died 23/07/1952.
Dora was only 7 years old when her mother Sarah died and was cared for by a Mrs Wilson as her father was ill also of influenza.
Albert after his recovery collected his four children and left Wellington for Waipukerau. This was where Dora schooled and later worked as a cook (1933) at Waipukerau, Pukeora Sanitorium (tuberculosis hospital) where she met Francis (Ross) Walkley and was married on October 26 1935.
Ross had a son Alan who was 5 years old. They lived and worked on Walkley farm then left to go to Auckland in 1938.
Dora?s father Albert L R Petherick went to the Boar War (South Africa) and as a soldier his horse got shot and fell on him breaking his neck so was returned to NZ and recovered.
Being in the NZ Railway at Waipawa, Ranfurly then with 2nd wife and family went to Auckland where he was to be promoted as Chief for Auckland NZ Railways, however because of health he retired and set up home at Pt Chevalier, then in 1940 moved to 14 Arapuni Ave, Onehunga where they had their second daughter Lois.
Dora died in the family home on January 13th 1991. Her ashes and a memorial plaque were made.
