Notes - Francis "Frank" was born 25 November 1861 at 11 Chryssell Road, North Brixton, Surrey in England.
Francis appears as a 9 year old child on the 1871 England Census living with his parents Henry [39 yrs] & Hannah [37 yrs], Annie [15 yrs], William [11 yrs], Arthur [10 yrs], Constance [6 yrs], Herbert [4 yrs], Frederick [2 yrs] and Sydney [1 yr]. They were still living at 11 Chryssell Road, Lambeth. At that time, Henry was listed as employed as a "Waterproofer". The children Annie, William, Arthur and Constance were listed as scholars, attending school.
Francis Charles John Walkley was one of the four brothers who emigrated to New Zealand between 1890 and 1902. William and Arthur Walkley remained with their father Henry to continue with the family business H. WALKLEY CO. LONDON manufacturers of Rubber and Wet Weather Clothing, also described as waterproofers -
Francis was one of the brothers who emigrated to New Zealand in the 1890's. Upon his arrival in New Zealand he lived at Ohau, north of Wellington where he conducted a business as a Storekeeper.
In 1900 he married Jessie Grace of Ohau. Their first daughter Constance was born in 1901. Their first son Laurence was born in 1902.
In 1903 Francis, Jessie, the children and Henry (Francis younger brother] Walkley returned to England. Henry entered Guy's Hospital in England undergoing major surgery.
Francis & Jessie, Constance, Laurence & Henry [Francis' younger brother] all returned to New Zealand in 1905.
On the 3rd of April 1906 Francis & Jessie?s 2nd son Ross Walkley was born. In 1907 their 4th child and 3rd son William Arthur was born.
After a few years in Ohau as General Store Keeper, Frank & Jessie moved leaving their home in Ohau to continue in business in a General Store at Mangatainoka. It was here where their 2nd daughter, 5th child Vera Gwendoline was born in 1913.
On relinquishing the store at Mangatainoka, Francis farmed for a short time with his sons at Takapau and on leaving the farm it was leased to his son in law, Joseph Stevenson.
Francis moved to 18 Chelwood Street, Palmerston North. This is where they lived and he retired.
The Ohau home was left to son Laurence Walkley and his family.
Francis died 19th August 1943 aged 82 in Levin, New Zealand.
