• Notes

  Herbert was born on the 24th January 1867 in Brixton, Surrey, England. At the time of the 1891 Census, Herbert was living - presumably boarding, with the Key family in Croydon. Agnus Key [75 yrs of age], Marian Key [34yrs of age], Edith Key [10 yrs of age] and Thomas Alexander Key [4 yrs of age]. Before emigrating to New Zealand Herbert is described as a Draper of Brixton, London, England. Upon arriving in New Zealand he settled in Otaki where he carried on in his trade, and as a general storekeeper. In 1892 he was married to Jessie Annie Gaston who had also come to New Zealand from England. She was 24 years of age, and it was here that some of their family were born, namely William Gaston born 1 Nov. 1896, and their second son Lionel Gaston who did not survive infancy but died 25 January 1899 and was interred in the Cemetery at Rangiatea, Otaki. Another son, Victor who did not survive infancy died 28 August 1903 and was buried in the Pahiatua Cemetery at Mangatainoka. When he left Otaki, Herbert moved to Feilding where he continued store keeping and it was here that William Gaston received his education at Feilding Agricultural High School. In 1916, Herbert's wife Jessie died and was interred in the Rongotea Cemetery, for it was about this time they had moved to Rongotea where he was employed for some time as a clerk. Herbert's last years were spent in Hawera where he died in 1932. He was buried in the Hawera Cemetery where he lies in an unmarked grave. Block XIX, plot 12. He was 65 years of age.
