  Left homeland for Australia in 1854. Spent time in Queensland. Went to goldmines in Ballarat & joined the Police Force during the "Eureka Stockade". In 1862 went to Dunstan, Otago during the goldrush. With outbreak of Maori wars, joined the Waikato Militia under Colonel Lyons [voluntary forces] later promoted to sergeant in 1864.
