Emigration 21 Sep 1883  London Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Immigrated with his three sons on the "SS Ionic" in 1883.
    • According to Dorothy Davies:
*He travelled in the USA, and in NZ, and back to the UK, before settling in NZ.
*Krakatoa erupted as they were waiting for passage in London.
    • Krakatoa erupted in August 1883. This would fit with an immigration on the Ionic in late 1883. According to newspaper reports the Ionic arrived in Wellington on the 10th of November 1883 after leaving London on the 21st September. This was the second trip the steamer had made to New Zealand in 1883.

    • There was a different Torkington family, Mr WJ Torkington, Elizabeth, Sarah, William and Hannah, who left London for Wellington on the 6th of March 1891. I can't find who this family are or any relationship to our Torkingtons.

    • House near Ted's orchard; his house blew over, on the ridge near Ti Tree Hill. - Alvin's note, 24 Apr 1972.

29 May 1998. In the map that I've recently xeroxed, a house is shown in the sou-west corner of Lot 149 as 'Torkington's house'. Ted believes that this is William Torkington's house. See James Torkington. -- Alvin
    Residence Abt 1890
    • There seems to have been two really old Torkington houses on the Torkington properties at Ti Point. One of these is the house shown on Lot 149 as 'Torkington's House'. This is in the sou-west corner of that lot. The southern boundary of that lot appears to be the line that forms the southern boundary of 'Aunty Lizzie's section', which became Syd's section.I have an earlier description (24 Apr 1972) of this house as being 'on the ridge near Ti Tree Hill'. The other house is a house that was 'near Ted's cowshed', which was near the first curve on the higher part of the Ti Point Road. This location is near Bill England's gate. It is on the west side of the road. There were two Torkington brothers involved: William (arrived NZ 1887), and James (arrived NZ 1892 ). My guess is that the first house, on lot 149, was William's house, and the second house was a temporary house of James's. James ultimately lived in the Dome Valley. One of these houses, it is said, 'blew over'. I take it that James's house was a temporary shack, where he lived while he negotiated for land in the Dome Valley, and that it is this house that 'blew over'. Perhaps it was merely abandoned, and and in due course it fell down. -- Notes by Alvin Smith
