  He came out on the Spray, not on the Gertrude with the rest of his family. "It is believed the reason why he sailed on the Spray was to accompany his widowed aunt, Margaret Matheson (his mother's sister), and her daughters. In New Zealand Neil remained a bachelor." (Sailors and Settlers) The author mostly likely made a mistake here - Margaret Matheson was actually his Grandmother, her daughters his aunts.
