Scope and Contents : A head and shoulders frontal portrait in an oval surround, showing a middle-aged woman in a close-fitting floral bonnet. She wears a black dress with a short white collar, a brooch at her neck
Other Notes : Martha Smith, nee Nevy was the wife of the proprietor of the Travellers Rest Inn, Wairoa, Papakura
Dating on the basis of the appearance of the bonnet, which was no longer in fashion by about 1865. The bonnet appears to have been painted in, rather than photographed on her. The Smiths ran the Travellers Rest Inn from 1853.
