  The surname 'Hollis' comes from a conjectural note from I think Kath Torkington. judging from a slip of paper she gave me. And confirmed by Mavis Russell. Died of consumption. 961024: I notice an old note of mine, which I can't construe: 'illegitimate and adopted by Miss Hollis, Katherine St, Under Lyne.' Who this note refers to I do not know. Eliza Hollas living with Aunt and Uncle Joseph and Sarah Hollas and family in 1851 in Ashton Under Lyne. And in 1861 (just with Sarah and family) Father's name given as Benjamin Grundy on marriage certificate. There was an Eliza Grundy born 2nd quarter 1843, mother's maiden name Hallows. England & Wales birth index on FindMyPast and Ancestry and FamilySearch. Her name was given as Eliza Hollis, date of birth 10 May 1843, Ashton Under Lyne from the family bible. A note in the family tree from Alvin states "I notice an old note of mine, which I can't construe:'illegitimate and adopted by Miss Hollis, Katherine St, Under Lyne.' Who this note refers to I do not know." In the marriage record to William Torkington her name is given as Eliza Hollas. Her father is listed as Benjamin Grundy (manager). In the 1851 census there is an Eliza Hollas living in the household of Joseph and Sarah Hollas in Dukenfield (just south of Ashton Under Lyne). She is listed as a niece, aged 7 years old. In the 1861 the same Eliza Hollas is living with Sarah Hollas, listed as niece. A Benjamin Grundy born 1818 in Ashton Under Lyne, living in Ashton Under Lyne can be found in the 1861 England Census with his wife Harriet. Eldest son aged 12. His occupation is given as Engine Driver. In a probate record for Benjamin Grundy he is listed as a cotton mill manager. His wife is listed as Harriet Grundy of Ashton under Lyne. A DNA match is a descendent of this same Benjamin Grundy (through his son Frederick). I have the birth record for Eliza Grundy born 17 May 1843, father Benjamin Grundy, mother Sarah Grundy, formerly Hallows. Father's profession is given as Engineer.
