• Notes

  Charles Clarke in his diaries calls Flo Davey, "Flo Simpson". He similarly refers to Grace, Flo's sister, as "Grace Simpson". It is not clear why he does this except that it may be proper form given that the two girls are not married and their mother who is married for a second time is called "Mrs Simpson".
