- I had a ring at Ti Point from Merlene 'Alice', an old woman with a quavering voice, who said that she wanted to get intouch with 'Kathy Alice', could I help her? (I found out later that it was John Matheson who had put her on to me!Merlene said her phone number was 4225882, and that there were two 'Mrs Turners' there. I had a look at my TMG data,but found that my Meiklejohn data was in fact rather in a mess. I seem to have got my data from a book, but the bookhad not been properly referenced. I also began to suspect that for some of my entries I had several entries for the oneperson. I finally rang Iris for help, and she suggested that I ring Beryl - Beryl Rathe. I found, to my surprise,that Colleen had died - and that Iris had spoken to me of her a month ago. Sjhe died about 14 September 2001. I'd sentBeryl a sympahy card. Beryl, in turn, suggested that I get in touch with a Sally Meiklejohn (4220656). SallyMeiklejohn suggested that I get in touch with Graham Alison (520 3467), who was Kathy Alison's son. (Thus, the 'KathyAlice' was in fact Kathy Alison. This suggests that Merlene had been misremembering the names she was giving me, andeven misrembering her own name.) And I was told that the Alisons had been the owners of the Devonport ferries. And I dorecall that one of the ferries was named the Alison. Graham Alison was out, and so I passed on to Merlene herself hisphone number. She seemed pleased with that. Merlene is 74, she says, my own age!
