      Howard - At Hamilton, on 3rd April, 1914: James Howard, late of Blenheim and Palmerston North, in his 80th year.

      James Howard, a very old resident of Marlborough, in his 80th year. The deceased, who was a native of Surrey, England, arrived in Wellington, by the barque Simlah early in the year 1855, coming on to the Wairau via Nelson immediately afterwards. He followed the occupation of a carpenter up to a few years ago, when he left Blenheim to reside in, Palmerston North. A family of three sons and eight daughters are left to mourn Ms loss, also twenty-eight grandchildren arid eight great-grandchildren. The Marlborough members of the; family are: Mrs H.'. Masters, Seddon, and Mesdames C. L. Goodman and W. H. Humphreys, of Blenheim. The interment took place at Palmerston North.

      Sir, - With your permission I beg leave to state that Robert Rush and friends are laboring under a mistake with reference to the first public house in the "Beaver" being built of gin cases. I therefore must contradict his assertion made at a public gathering that such was the case. Now Sir, to my certain knowledge no such place existed when I arrived at "Beaver" (March, 1855) or since. How R. R. can say, that he believes part of the erection was still standing when he arrived here 20 years ago, I cannot think. I can bring several witnesses to prove that what I state is correct. - Yours &c.,
