Charles, Maria, and their children Ellen Mary (b. Ely, England July 19th 1843), Emily Maria (b. Ely - England 1845) and Frederick Alexander (b. Ely England 1847) arrived in Auckland NZ on the ship 'Creswell' [sic], 574 tons, Capt. Barnett, on September 13th (or ?6th) in 1863 after calling at New Plymouth, Taranaki to offload passengers and cargo.....Mr Hills was a carriage builder by trade, but finding no work in NZ worked as a coach builder for Mr Jeffrey's (a pioneer coach builder). There is more detail if you wish to know - about where they lived in Auckland. Mr Hills moved to Thames at the outbreak of gold fields, and then Poverty Bay in Gisborne when oil was found. Now, you will be interested in the following - an extract from the typed paper on the Charles Hills family mentioned earlier (again, I believe this was created in the first half of the 20th century directly from one of the Hills in Auckland.
"They first lived in a two roomed Cottage (which was the only house procurable) in Hobson St., (near the corner of Wellesly St. West, on the South side) , their immediate neighbours being Messrs. Shannahn and Griffin. They next resided in Vincent St., then at the N.E. corner of Havelock St. and Wynard St., then in Wellesley St. Mr. Hills built a row of Cottages facing Wellesley and Albert Sts. Mr...[Charles Hills] later commenced business on his own account and built the first cab and first dogcart in Auckland. The cab was made to the order of Mr. H. Hardington, who ran a bus service to Onehunga. The dogcart was built to the order of Mr. Wm. Coldicutt, a farmer residing in Epsom. Mr Hills removed to Thames, on the outbreak of the gold-fields there. When "Oil" was discovered at Poverty Bay Mr. Hills removed to Gisborne he subsequently returned to Auckland, where he died in 1892."
