Notes - His wife Isabella is listed as a widow who accompanied her husband on the Spray. This implies that Ewen Matheson (#62) died before 1857. [2]
- Gertie Smith in her note gives Roderick Matheson as the father of Captain Angus Matheson, not Ewen Matheson. This is 1 on my typescript sheet.
- 'In 1845 the brig 'Perseverance' of 103 tons was built by Hugh Matheson who sold her to W B Fairbanks and C D Allison. But this transaction was not completed satisfactorily and she was operated by Captain M Carlin of North Sydney while Matheson held the mortgage.' [3]
- DB: AGFF, p. 7. 961104. According to Joyce Wyatt, he deserted his family, and son Duncan became the breadwinner. Son Angus got the education. Ewen Matheson shot through to America, to Nova Scotia. Several have looked for evidence of him there, but nonthing has been found. [4, 5]
- 'Hugh Matheson' is named as sailing master to Norman McLeod's boat 'Arc'. [6]
- 'In September 1819, after furnishing her with provisions, charts, compasses and all the nesessary supplies for the voyage to Ohio, the old, or rather then the young, parson appointed my father (Norman McDonald) navigator, D Mc Leod(Squire) sailing master, Hugh Matheson, chief officer, John McLeod ("Arichat"), my brother Alex. (McDonal) and a few others being the crew'. The author quoting Murdoch McDonald. [7]
- In "To the Ends of the Earth" by Neil Robinson, Belle Matheson is quoted as saying his name was only spoken in whispers and that he must have gone looking for greener pastures or other harbours.
